Fortunate son by Walter Mosley is a captivating and thrilling book to read. Two boys, one of black race and the other of white race are born a week apart. Thomas the older boy is born to a single mother Branwyn and has a birth defect.
Eric’s mother dies a few hours after child birth due to some complications and his father Dr. Minas Nolan, a heart surgeon is left to bring him up. Dr. Nolanmeets meets Branwyn as she leaves the ICU one night and slowly the two fall in love.
As the fortunate son story build up, Branwyn and Thomas move into the doctors house and they become a close-knit family with Eric watching over the slower, sickly Tommy wherever they went and loves Branwyn so deeply.
Six years later the bubble bursts, when first Tommy’s birth father Elton asks Branwyn to introduce him to his son and then shortly afterwards Branwyn dies. Elton takes Tommy away from Dr. Nolan and Eric saying that Tommy has to grow up among people of ‘his own kind’.
The life that follows for the two boys sees Eric grow and thrive and Thomas move from one form of abuse, neglect and hardship to another. Walter Mosley the author delivers a story that at times make you cry and hate the world and at other times just shake your head.
The lives these two boys live through are so different but all through the story you see and feel the bond that the two have. At age nineteen, the two meet up again and this time it is Thomas who saves Eric. At first, I thought that Eric was the fortunate son but as I read further I saw and realized that indeed Thomas was the fortunate son.
